3. Let’s egg Monica’s bright green 1990’s Pontiac Firebird
“What,” asked the middle-aged woman a moment after I’d snapped the picture, “in God’s name—” and then she stopped talking.
“Ma’am,” Augustus said, nodding toward her, “your daughter’s car has just been deservedly egged by a blind man. Please go back inside or we’ll be forced to call the police.”
Somewhere in the beginning of the novel, we learn that Isaac’s girlfriend Monica broke up with him because she could not handle that he was going to be blind after his operation. It broke Isaac’s heart and that is why Gus decides to take revenge on Monica – by egging her car.
I love this scene in the novel, it is one of my favorites. Why? Because it’s funny and light and airy. It shows that, although Gus, Hazel and Isaac are suffering from severe illness, they are still teenagers and they see justice in egging somebody’s car. I expect this scene to be funny and refreshing, in between the drama and the epic one-liners.
