9. Hazel meets Gus
“What?” I asked.
“Nothing,” he said.
“Why are you looking at me like that?”
Augustus half smiled. “Because you’re beautiful.”
The first clip of “The Fault In Our Stars” has already been released: the infamous “Metaphor”-clip. Gus uses his manly wiles to impress Hazel, who rather casually waves him off. I am really glad they chose this particular scene to promote the film, because it shows off the perfect casting choices.
In this only one minute long clip, Woodley is radiant and so completely Hazel. She looks the part, she speaks like Hazel, she is Hazel – with her silent intelligence, strong opinions, honesty and disarming humor. Woodley was brilliant as the shy Aimee in 2013’s “The Spectacular Now” and if her performance is as authentic in the “The Fault in Our Stars” as it is in this short clip and previous work, she is going to be amazing. But let us not forget about Ansel Eglort, portraying Augustus Waters rather disarmingly. The famous crooked smile Hazel uses to describe Gus’ smile has come to life in this clip. Eglort has the confidence, the humor and the pretentiousness to portray Gus perfectly and I expect him to do so in the film.
